What am I?

Today we wrote what am I's? We had to choose an animal and give clues about it so the person reading can guess what animal it is. We drew a picture for the answer. We put some paper over the picture so it can be lifted up to see the answer. You can come and see them in our class or look at them on our blog.

How about you try making a What Am I?

Today we started to make a Christmas tree out of our hands. We put newspaper on the tables so we didn't get paint everywhere. We painted our hands and put our hands on a piece of paper. We are waiting for the prints to dry then we will cut them out. It was cool making a Christmas tree. We will need to make decorations to put on our tree. We'll show you a picture when our tree is finished.

Native New Zealand Birds Discovery Time

Today for Discovery Time we have been looking at birds from Mount Bruce. They came from Te Manawa. There were some birds eggs to look at. There was a kiwi egg, a chicken egg, an ostrich egg, owl egg and hummingbird eggs. The eggs were all different sizes. The ostrich egg was the biggest and the humming bird eggs were the smallest. They were tiny!!

There were some puppets, saddle back, kiwi and a pukeko. There were also some birds feet. The black shag's foot looked like a bat's wing. There was a foot with really long and sharp claws!

There were some puzzles where you have to figure out what the name was, what the beak does and what the feet does.

There were also some books that you could read. The books had information about the different birds.

We love native birds!

We saw two kiwis and we watched a video of a kiwi hatching. There were some tuataras that we really old. One of the tuataras name was Sam. At the very end we saw the people feeding the big eels. There were some teachers and parents who helped us. Ashlee said thank you to the Mount Bruce people when we left. It was extraordinarily fun!!

Music with Kirsten

Today Kirsten brought in a few instruments. When Kirsten said 'NOW' we swapped instruments. Every third person got to have the first go with an instrument. We were playing instruments to the music. We were trying to play the beat. 6 of us went in a circle in the middle and then Sophie was the conductor and when she wanted to play some music she tapped the person on the head. We had heaps of fun with Kirsten with our music.

The Production

Last night we had the real production. We've been practising lots and lots so we can be really good at it. We were excited on the night when it was happening. We were so excited when we went on stage. We were nervous to go on stage because there were more than 800 people watching us. We practised on the stage at the Regent for the whole day so the people at the Regent could get the lights, screen, music and the curtain right. We had to wait for a long time in the green room until it was our turn. We played with the lego, coloured in and did other activities while we waited. But we all made it through the long wait and we did an Incredible job. We are SO proud of our performance.

We Won!

We almost forgot to tell you that we won the RWC Challenge for the juniors! How exciting. We got the same amount of points as Cloud 9 who won for the seniors. We are so proud of ourselves!

We wonder what the prize will be. Ebony told us it was going to be sometime this week but we don't know what and we don't know when. What do you think it might be?

Some of our ideas have been an iPad (we wish!), pizza and muffins.

Hokey Pokey

Today for D.T. we made hokey pokey. Matthew and Reagan got to read the recipe. We melted sugar and golden syrup in the pan. Then we added baking soda. The hokey pokey frothed up when we added the baking soda. We had to quickly put it in the tin foil. At lunch we got to eat it. It tasted like a lolly. It was scrummy in my tummy! It was crunchy too.

Must Do, Can Do

Today for literacy we have done Must Do, Can Do. First we have to do the must does and then we can choose what we want out of the can does. We do not have to do them in the same order as they are written. The must does might be things like reading groups, read three big books and read three poems. Can does could be things like word power, magnetic letters and jokes. The must do and can do activities change everyday.

We like doing this because you don't have to look up on the board and we get choose. You could have a go doing this in your class.

iPad Exploration

After lunch we got the 15 iPads and had a time of exploration. There are heaps of things on the iPad like paint, a balloon game and iSay a game where you copy the colours. We went with a buddy because there was only 15 iPads and there are 25 of us. I got one to myself (Sophie). We learnt how to do the dot to dot. I learnt to play some of the games and draw some pictures. I learnt to press the button beside the screen to get out of an app. We were trying to make numbers and there could be more than one pair of fingers on the same number.

We had loads of fun!

Tabitha's Holiday Story

Today Tabitha and all of the Incredibles did writing. We wrote about the holidays. This is Tabitha's story. She told us lots of information. She worked really hard to make it really interesting. We liked it when Tabitha said that Oscar was bored out of his mind. I liked the way she used the word celebrate because it has good detail (George). The word that is a bit interesting is fantastic (Sophie).

Kapia to mahi Tabitha!

The Gleek Club

Today the Gleek Club did some dances for us in the hall. There were two girls that had a hip hop dance for us. Wow Jessica and Cara, that was a cool hip hop dance! The Gleeks did three different songs. They did good dancing. Forrest's dad helped them. He played the piano. Michael played a video of the drama we have done this term. It is sad that Michael is leaving.

Congratulating Lee

Today Lee came to Russell Street School. She went to the Olympics in Greece. She won four medals. She won two bronze, one silver medal and one gold medal. We got to look at the medals closely. David was holding one of them. We got to hold the medals. David said, "would you like to feel how heavy the medal is?" It was very exciting. We did a huka for her. I hope she liked it. We had balloons in our hands too.

Lachlan's Explanation about shadows

Thanks to Zara for filming Lachlan's explanation.

Buddy Time

Today we made rakau sticks and poi with our buddy class. To make a poi we had to have a plastic bag and put fluff in and twist it and then you put the bag around it again. Then you twisted it. You need some string and you have to cellotape it on and then you have to cut the edges of the bag. Then you can do something with your poi.

You can make rakau sticks too by rolling a magazine and then put on the magazine and hold it so it doesn't unfold. You need two people to make it so one person can hold the rakau stick and the other can tape it.

We had to work really well together to make the poi and the rakau sticks. Some of it was really tricky!

Thanks to Jack and Reagan for the photos!

Spider legs

Last week we read Spider Legs for our poem of the week. We all made a poem about like spider legs but we chose an animal part that we might want.

Ross did one called Octopus Arms. He took his time and he did it very neatly, even the writing! We love how you did the writing nice and neat. In his writing he put ideas to help him think of good words that could go in his poem. Bolt liked it too! Kapai to mahi, Ross.

Here is the Spider Legs poem and Ross's poem called Octopus Arms.

Our Rocket Artwork

Yesterday we did rocket artwork with Michael. We drew our rockets on gray paper, coloured them in and then cut them out. Then we had to draw a sun that was yellow with a smiley face on it. Gracie's sun had a sad face because the rocket was catching it. We glued our rockets and suns onto a black piece of paper and drew stars on the black paper to look like the night sky.

Bye Jane!

Jane was our student teacher for 3 weeks. She left on Friday. When Jane left, she gave us some silly bands and some pencils. We got to choose what colour we wanted. The colours were pink, purple, orange, green, red, yellow and dark blue.

We gave Jane a card.

Jane was a good teacher. We learned heaps of things. I learned that you can't share thirds with ten (Charlotte).

Bye Jane. We loved having you in our class. We all miss you. You taught us a lot. We will miss you and hope you will come and see us soon. I hope you like the thing that you gave us. We liked what you gave us too.

Matariki

Yesterday we played some Matariki games. The tiaha stick was for strengthening your wrists. We had to try and try until we could use the sticks properly. It was fun at Matariki game time.

On Friday we are going to have a shared lunch to celebrate Matariki. Remember to bring some lunch to share. Parents are welcome too.

Drama

We went to drama. It was very exciting. Michael was the teacher. Michael if Forrest's Dad. It was fun at drama because we acted. It was fun when we played "You" because Michael kept on walking with his hand out straight. Michael had a want that made us turn into a giant, frog and Jack from Jack and the Bean Stalk. Michael is funny. We are looking forward to next time!

Shadows

We stood really still and drew around our shadow. The first time we did it, the sun was behind the clouds and it did not work. The second we went around the back and it was sunny and it worked. They looked skinny, long and black. We drew them twice. The second time they looked different. It looked longer. It was going to a different way to your first shadow.

We think they looked different because the sun has moved.

Thursday, May 19, 2011

What is a shadow?

We read a book about shadows. We are going to make some shadows, tomorrow. We asked some questions like does the sun come up everyday? Does the sun come up even when it's cloudy. The sun is hiding behind the clouds. We think we still have shadows even when it's cloudy and the sun is hiding behind the clouds.

Do you still have shadows at night time when it's dark? Your homework is to find out!

Cross Country

The Incredibles Art

This week we have done some art. We are doing Eric Carle art. We painted the background which is the sky and the garden for our flowers. We had white, yellow red and blue paint. We mixed all the colours to make brown. It was tricky to have the right amounts of colours to make it go brown. We think we did a pretty good job!

Next, we are going to stick the flowers on our paintings and make some bugs to go in our garden. We can’t wait to make our bugs!

Student Lead Conference Practise

Today we have been practising our student lead conferences. It was exciting because we are going to tell our parents what we learnt. We went in pairs with buddies and we talked about what we have been learning in our portfolios. We tell our mum and dads what we did, what we were learning and getting better at, how you know you are getting better at it and how I can keep getting better. It was fun practising. We are getting better at it.

Ronald MacDonald

Today we had a big surprise. Ronald MacDonald came to Russell Street School. He came to Russell Street School because he wanted to teach us about road safety and to find his red and white sock.

Ronald MacDonald had a big book. The book was about finding his lost sock. He had to cross roads and driveways in the story. We helped Ronald MacDonald cross the roads safely. We learnt to stop, look and listen when we are crossing the road or a sneaky driveway. Ronald MacDonald had a song and it was called Make It Click. It was about putting your seatbelt on when you get in the car.

When he left he said “hasta la vista, baby!” Ronald was really funny!

Our new class member

We have a new member in our class. Her name is Calais. Sophie and Charlotte have been great friends because they play with her at brunch and lunch. She has just moved from Wanganui. She is very cool. Welcome to The Incredibles, Calais.

Cross Country Practice

Today we did cross country practice. It was fun. We have to run around the whole school without stopping. You have to run slowly so that at the end you can run really fast. If you ran really fast at the beginning you wouldn't be able to run all the way and you would go slowly at the end so you won't be able to come first, second or third. When Lou claps that when you go. The whole school did the cross country practice.

First day of Term 2

Today at school it was the first day of term 2. It was really exciting to be back and to see our friends at school.

We started the day with a big book and a poem. We chose a Incredible Person who was Vincent. Congratulations Vincent! We had Discovery Time. We had lots of fun activities. It was exciting at Discovery Time.

After Discovery Time we wrote about our holidays. We talked in our buzz groups before writing. We had to include lots of detail. Adding detail is important because if you just write one thing it is not enough because we don't know what you did that much and the person reading your story wouldn't understand your writing.

Here are some photos of us concentrating on our writing.

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Eric Carle Art

Eric Carle is an author. He wrote “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Eric Carle doesn’t just do one colour he does lots of colours. He uses more detail when he does the garden and the trees. He uses patterns on his colours. He doesn’t just paint with a paint brush. We think he might use coloured paper, rollers, sponges and tooth picks. We are going to start making flowers and make a big garden. We wait till tomorrow!!!

Hook Tag

At fitness we played a game of hook tag. Matt taught us it. It is loads of fun!

This is how you play Hook Tag:

1. You need 3 taggers.
2. You have a partner and you have to hook arms with each other.
3. Now you can start running around without letting go. You have to have good teamwork.
4. The taggers hook on to one end of a pair and the person on the other end is now a tagger.

You should try playing hook tag. Maybe you'll have as much fun as we did.

Autumn Leaves

We made a picture of autumn leaves. We went to find some autumn leaves in the playground. We saw some yellow, some, some brown, some orange and some green leaves. Then we went inside and got a piece of paper and we went to a table coloured int he piece of paper with lots of autumn colours. We used crayons. We covered the paper with black paint. Then we had to wait for a couple of days for the black paint to dry. Today we scratched pictures of leaves with a knife. The black paint came off and the crayon was turned into a leaf. They look really colourful!
